Healthy Chocolate Milkshake

With the warm weather of summer, most people are looking for ways to keep cool, especially when it comes to beverages. There are many sugary and unhealthy options that can seem convenient to consume for you or your little one. However, these drinks often do more harm than good. Sodas, coffee drinks, and too much juice can leave the body dehydrated and feel tired or cranky.

Ice cream is often a summertime favorite and a base for milkshakes, which many people enjoy and use to help them cool off. I found myself craving one when the temperatures were soaring in Southern California last week. However, I didn’t want the sugar and processed stuff that comes in many fast food restaurants shakes. I was looking through Pinterest and found some good options, including a Chocolate Banana Peanut Butter Shake. In the end, it was my husband that reminded me of a healthy chocolate milkshake we had tried at Chef AJ’s  Cooking Class a few months back.

This recipe is great because all the ingredients are available in most grocery stores and unprocessed.  Also, this is a great way to sneak in some green veggies (good source of fiber and vitamins) and flaxseeds (great veggie source of Omega-3 fatty acids) into a treat.

One note: I made a few modifications to the recipe and for some people, the shake may be sweet enough without adding any dates. If you have not used dates before, it can be a little daunting. There are many varieties of dates and one of the major differences is the sweetness. Start by adding one date (remove pit), blend, and then tasting the shake.
