Trending Bytes, Spring Edition – Heidi

I hope that spring has found its way to you! In the Bay Area, we are having an early preview of summer with temperatures in the 80’s and 90’s. Then by Friday, it will be in the 60’s, so the weather is a little wacky right now. But enough about the weather….

This Trending Bytes Edition is extra special for me due to my big announcement! I am pregnant! Currently, in my 5th month and moving right along. Stay tuned for blogs about how I prepped for pregnancy, tips for surviving the first trimester, and much more. I am excited to share my journey down this wonderful, humbling, and never a dull moment pregnancy. Now on to what I am loving right, which as you can probably guess has to do with being pregnant.

RX Bars

I discovered these protein bars recently and fell in love. I am usually not a fan of protein bars because they usually are loaded up with sugar and/or artificial sweeteners, lacking in protein, and a long list of ingredients. But not the RX bar! These bars are sweetened by dates, which technically breaks down to sugar in the body. However, each bar is packed with 12 grams of protein from egg whites and nuts. The nuts do double duty as they also supply a good source of fat. Both protein and fat help to keep you satiated and slow down the release of sugar as well. Obviously, depending on the flavor the ingredients vary, but for the most part, the ingredients are no more than 6 or 7 most of which are whole foods. YAY! As my appetite increases, I need to be able to carry snacks with me and these are great. To keep from overdoing I usually try to eat half, drink some water, and wait 30 minutes before having the rest. If you have blood sugar issues I would suggest checking with your doctor or health practitioner to see if you should consume them.

Note: RX bars can be found online and found in many grocery stores (availability may vary).

Getting Organized, Plus a Dash of Self- Love!

A few weeks ago, I had a bit of a meltdown because I was feeling very overwhelmed. From working, taking care of household stuff, hobbies, planning out the next few months with classes, baby showers, etc. and what feels like a million details I was losing it. Plus, I am still adjusting to my less favorite symptom: pregnancy brain! I used to be a bit judging when women told me they had this. Now I am eating my words because I am experiencing it in all its glory! From forgetting words, tasks, or just feeling plain distracted it has made my life a bit hectic, especially since I use to pride myself on being able to remember things and be on top of life. Here are the tools that I have been using to get organized and regain some sense of order back into my life:

  • Write down everything – No matter how small the task (i.e. text Crystal) to the large ones (sign up for birthing classes) this has eliminated most of the “I know there was something I needed to do…” moments.
  • Create Lists – From what to do, what to get, who to invite, etc. Having lists has helped me both when people ask what I need and as a way to not have to remember it all. I like to use either a Google Doc, Google Keep or Trello for this. Big bonus is that I can share the lists as needed.
  • Asking for Help – This one has been hard for me. Like really hard. I tend to want to do stuff on my own or figure it out for myself. Yes, this is as frustrating as it sounds for me as it is for everyone else 😉 Anyways, I have realized I human and growing a human has meant I need to offload some tasks. It also means I need to figure out what I need/want… but more on that in a future blog! Basically, I am figuring out that people want to support me and my growing family and that doesn’t mean I am a weak person because I need more help. Too bad it took me this long to figure it out!
  • Self-Compassion – This has become essential because as mention above my life has been changing mentally, physically, and emotionally. All for the better and it has still taken some getting use to. I am relating to myself and others differently. My priorities are shifting and my body is changing. I feel and express emotions stronger and easier. So the last thing I need is to have an internal voice telling me I am not good enough or not doing enough. Thus, I am working on replacing it with a reminder to take everything one day at a time and that I am doing my best.

There you have it my big announcement and my favorite things related to this point in my pregnancy. Please check back for more blogs on this and future Trending Bytes blogs that will move from being monthly to seasonally.
